Welcome to the city of Somerset!
Located 15 miles southwest of San Antonio in Bexar County, Somerset is a town steeped in history and community pride. Its roots trace back to 1848, when Baptist families from Somerset, Kentucky, settled three miles south in what is now Atascosa County. In 1909, A. M. Pyron, Carl Kurz, and Jonas A. Kerr formed the First Townsite Company, naming the new location Somerset. The town quickly grew along the Artesian Belt Railroad, attracting families and businesses from the surrounding area.
The Oil Boom That Transformed Somerset
In 1913, Carl Kurz struck oil while drilling for water, sparking a boom that would define Somerset’s early economy. The Somerset oil field became the largest shallow oil field in the world, stretching to below Pleasanton. Two refineries and a pipeline to San Antonio processed the high-quality crude, drawing workers and businesses to the area. By 1928, the population soared to 700, supported by industries such as blacksmithing and a bustling ten-room hotel.
Coal Mining, Farming, and a Prosperous Economy
Somerset’s economic success didn’t stop with oil. The nearby lignite coal mine added another layer of prosperity, while the 1920s saw farmers shift from cotton to fruit and vegetable farming. The Somerset Fruit Growers Exchange, opened in 1931, became a hub for the town’s agricultural success. Between oil, coal, and truck farming, Somerset thrived until the Great Depression slowed its rapid growth. Despite the challenges, the town retained its resilient spirit.
Education and Community Growth
Somerset’s commitment to education dates back to 1920, when five school districts—Wildman, Senior, Bexar, Old Rock, and Oak Island—merged to form the Somerset Independent School District. Covering 84 square miles across Bexar and Atascosa counties, the district became a vital part of the community. In 1973, Somerset officially incorporated and adopted a mayor-council government, enabling the town to continue developing its infrastructure and services. By 2000, the population reached 1,550.

Somerset’s rich history and strong community ties make it a special place to live and visit. From its early days as a railroad town to its oil and coal booms, Somerset has continually adapted and thrived. Today, residents balance farming, ranching, and oilfield work with modern opportunities in nearby San Antonio. The town is home to a chamber of commerce, local businesses, and active civic organizations that celebrate its past while building for the future.
